The Reco Dawson era at Georgia Highlands College began with a statement Saturday night in Rome, as the Chargers secured a hard-fought victory over Action Sports Academy. The win marks Dawson’s first as GHC’s head coach and sets a promising tone for the season ahead.
From the opening tip, GHC and ASA traded blows in a tightly contested matchup. Neither team managed to pull away, keeping fans on edge throughout the full forty minutes. The Chargers held a slim 32–29 lead at halftime and clung to that advantage through a tense second half. ASA made a late push, narrowing the gap to 60–61 with under ten seconds remaining, but clutch defense and poised free-throw shooting sealed the deal for the home team.
Offensively, Braylen Smith (Augusta Christian), Josh Cooper (Trinity Prep), and Landen Williams (Grissom) each poured in 14 points to lead the Chargers. On the boards, Justen Goudelock (Athens Christian) grabbed 8 rebounds, while Justin Rushin (Westminster Catawba) added 7.
The Chargers return to action Wednesday night, hosting Reinhardt University JV at the Floyd Campus Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
