Chargers Split Opening Day of GCAA Tournament, Set for Elimination Showdown Thursday
Georgia Highlands College softball opened the GCAA Tournament with a dominant 10-2 victory over Andrew College on Wednesday, but saw a late lead slip away in a heartbreaking 7-6 walk-off loss to Gordon State in the nightcap.
The Chargers wasted no time getting started in game one, exploding for four runs in the first inning to set the tone. Grace Kendrick (Loganville HS) took care of the rest, limiting the Tigers to just two runs in the second inning before settling in to finish off a commanding performance in the circle.
In game two, Georgia Highlands appeared poised to sweep the day, building a 6-2 lead by the sixth inning. However, defensive miscues proved costly as Gordon State chipped away at the lead. With the Chargers clinging to a 6-5 advantage and one out away from a win in the bottom of the seventh, a dropped fly ball in left field allowed the tying run to score. The Highlanders completed the comeback in the very next at-bat with a walk-off single.
Emma Darrow (South Effingham HS) led the offensive charge in the nightcap, going 3-for-4. Ahmani Green (Worth Co. HS) and Cayden Warren (East Paulding HS) each drove in two runs. On the mound, Hayden Joyner (Bryan Co. HS) gave a strong effort, going 6.2 innings while allowing just two earned runs on nine hits.
Georgia Highlands will now face South Georgia State in a must-win elimination game at 1 p.m. Thursday. The Chargers hold a 4-0 season record against the Hawks. The winner advances to face either Georgia Military College or Gordon State at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
