Georgia Highlands College softball split a doubleheader Tuesday against 14th ranked Chattanooga State Community College at Carol Brown Field. The Chargers won the first game 4-3 before dropping the second one in extra innings. The win brings them to 7-7 overall on the young season and 7-2 at home.
GHC struck first in the second inning when an errant throw allowed Anslee Logan (Loganville, GA) to score on an Emmalee Freeman (Leesburg, GA) single. Chattanooga State evened the game in the third on a sacrifice bunt by Kamryn Radley, but Georgia Highlands responded immediately in the bottom of the inning as Emily Ferro (Villa Rica, GA) executed a sacrifice bunt that put the Chargers back in front.
Georgia Highlands extended its advantage in the fourth when Gracie Azpeitia Chamblee, GA) delivered a solo home run to left field. Ferro delivered a complete performance on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits over seven innings with six strikeouts and three walks.
At the plate, Azpeitia and Logan each collected two hits, while Azpeitia, CeCe Williams (Covington, GA) and Ferro contributed RBI knocks to secure the victory over one of the nation’s top teams.
the nightcap, Georgia Highlands battled back from an early deficit but ultimately fell 5-4 in extra innings.
Chattanooga State jumped out quickly with an early run in the first and extended its lead in the fourth on a three-run homer from Watson. Despite facing a talented, nationally ranked lineup, Georgia Highlands showed resilience by chipping away, eventually tying the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Ferro.
However, the visitors regained the lead in the eighth inning on an RBI base hit that proved to be the difference in the contest.
The Chargers offense was led by Williams’ three-hit effort. Azpeitia, Emma Darrow (Guyton, GA), Williams and Ferro each drove in a run, while Ahmani Green (Albany, GA) and Linley Haynes (Rome, GA) added multiple-hit efforts. Defensively, Georgia Highlands was sharp, committing zero errors.
Haley Curtis (Dalton, GA) got the start and allowed four runs over three innings, while Athens Hudson (Plainville, GA) turned in a strong relief performance with five innings of one-run ball and four strikeouts.
The Chargers return to action Saturday to open conference play against Georgia Military College at Carol Brown Field. The doubleheader is set for first pitch at 2pm.
